Is Guild Wars: Prophecies required to play Factions?
No. Factions has the capability to be played as a stand alone game. Although, players who already have the Prophecies campagin are able to use previous characters and travel to the exciting world of Cantha, thereby enjoying all of the new quests, items, and areas with their preexisting characters.

I've purchased Factions, but I also have Guild Wars:Prophecies, the first game. What do I do ?
There are a few things that you can do:
Separate Accounts
You can choose to install Factions as a separate independant game altogether. The installation will have to be a different location than where you installed the first game to.
Doing this will give you 4 slots for Faction and will not affect Prophecies in anyway.
Basically speaking you will have two different games installed on your machine.
You will not be able to transport your original characters in Tyria (Prophecies) to the continent of Cantha(Factions) and hence they will not have access to any new spells or armour or professios that are released with Factions.
Likewise, your 4 new characters for the Factions installation will be cut off from Tyria in everyway.
However you will still be able to interact and play with or against from other players from any chapter in areas common to you both.
Merging accounts
The other option is that you can add your Faction CD key to your existing installation of Guild Wars Prophecies and the content of the new Chapter shall be unlocked for your account.
In doing so, you will gain two new slots and the ability to treat Tyria and Cantha (Prophecies and Factions) as a part of one large world. You shall be able to transport your characters to and fro the two regions with ease and all your characters shall have access to the entire contents of both games.

I've purchased both Guild Wars:Prophecies and Guild Wars:Factions for the first time. What should I do ?
Like stated above, you can choose to install the two different games in different locations on your computer and play them as two separate games. It's that simple.
This will gain you two accounts and is the same as having two separate accounts
If you wish to merge accounts as stated before, simply install Guild Wars:Prophecies and then install Guild Wars:Factions to the same location, adding your Factions CD Key to the existing installation.

I have Guild Wars:Prophecies and my friend has Guild Wars: Factions. Can we still play together?
It is very well possible to play together in PvP. Battle Isles are shared by every chapter, so it's possible for Prophecies only players to team up with and fight against Factions only players. The only difference will be in the classes and skills available to you, but the game is balanced enough that the battlefield will still be level. You are not at a disadvantage when you have one chapter, you just have less options. There are skills that act as doubles for skills from other chapters, so it will not be a big problem.

I have Guild Wars:Prophecies and my friend has both the chapters i.e. Guild Wars: Factions and Guild Wars:Prophecies. Can we still play together?
Yes but in different ways depending on how your friend installed the two games.
If your friend merged accounts (see above) then your firend will be able to transport all his or her characters of any professions (including the new ones of the Assassin and the Ritualist) between Tyria and Cantha (Prophecies and Factions).
You however, shall only be able to interact with his/her characters when they are in Tyria as you will not have access to the Continent of Cantha that comes with Guild Wars:Factions.

I have Guild Wars:Prophecies and have also bought Guild Wars:Factions. I want to merge accounts.Do I still need to install Factions from scratch from the CD?
Much of the Faction contents would already be on your machine, since before the Factions Preview Event, Arena.net would have streamed the new content right onto your harddisk.
Just add your Factions Retail CD Key from the main screen and you should be good to go except for any extra content that might have been put up which will have to be downloaded.
